What is TurnItIn?


Turnitin is plagiarism detection software that scans student work for matched text by comparing the work to a large database of student work, publications, and materials on the Internet. The Turnitin service is available through an interface built in to Weill Cornell's Canvas Learning Management System. 


What kinds of publications does TurnItIn check against?


Turnitin uses three databases for content matching:

  • 50+ billion web pages crawled
  • 400+ million archived student papers
  • 130+ million articles from 110,000+ journals periodicals & books

How do I create a new assignment with Turnitin?


You can enable Turnitin as part of a new Canvas assignment. Turnitin is enabled on a per-assignment basis in Canvas. However, Turnitin must be enabled by your institution at the account level for it to be available in your course. More info


Do I have to turn on Turnitin before my assignments go out to students or can I run it anytime after my assignments go out to students?


TurnItIn must be enabled before assignments are submitted. It can be enabled after the assignment has been created, but TurnItIn will not check assignments that have already been turned in for originality.


How do I Set Advanced Options? 


Advanced settings can be accessed during the assignment creation or editing stage. More info


What file types does Turnitin accept? And can I limit by file type?


Turnitin accepts only particular file types for your students' submissions:

  • MS Word (.doc and .docx)
  • WordPerfect (.wpd)
  • PostScript (.ps)
  • Portable Document Format (.pdf)
  • HTML (.htm and .html)
  • Rich Text Fomrat (.rtf)
  • Plain Text (.txt)


In Canvas, you can limit the file extension types for your students' Assignments submissions. In the options menu of an Assignment, place a check next to "Restrict the Permitted File Upload Extensions," and then you can list the allowed file extensions. More info


Can I see Turnitin feedback in the Gradebook?


You can see Turnitin feedback by viewing the originality report in the Gradebook and more details can be seen in the SpeedGrader. If the submission is not analyzed by Turnitin, make sure the file type is an accepted format and have the student resubmit the assignment. Also, check to see if there are any submission errors. How does Turnitin work in the SpeedGrader™?


Turnitin provides an originality report letting the instructor know how much of the assignment is original. This report is displayed in SpeedGrader. More Info


Does Turnitin penalize students who legitimately use the same content, such as quotes?


You can set whether or not you ignore quoted material in the Advanced Settings options in the course setup. More info
