Preparing To Publish: Exploring Avenues of Response

Exploring Avenues of Response

  • Who is citing your work?

    • Set up alerts to remain up to speed

    • Check citation databases such as Web of Science, Google Scholar, and Scopus

  • Altmetrics

Altmetrics is an alternative citation metric that uses a unique identifier, such as  DOI, to track the attention metrics for a particular output, such as a journal article or dataset.

What makes Altmetric different from more traditional metrics  such as JCR is that its numbers are based on attention or mentions, not citations. It also focuses on single articles, rather than a journal as a whole. This allows authors to track their work more closely, and see what exposure they are getting.

The metrics are compiled from 3 different outlets:

  • Social media (Twitter, Facebook)

  • Traditional media (news outlets)

  • Online reference managers (Mendeley, CiteULike)
